Academic Days
PGY 1 and PGY 2 Family Medicine Residents will attend Academic Days (AD) which are held the 2nd Wednesday of every month. The Site Specific portion of AD will be held in the mornings at your home base and the Large Group portion of AD will be held in the afternoon at the Walter MacKenzie Health Sciences Centre.
From these sessions, residents have the opportunity to:
- gain knowledge from a variety of Family Physicians through presentations and Q&A sessions;
- facilitate interaction between first and second year family medicine residents and faculty;
- provide an opportunity to address those objectives that may not be met throughout the two-year residency training program in the clinical settings.
Absence Policy
It is the policy of the Family Medicine Residency Program to release all residents from rotations for Academic Day. Expectations:
- All residents within a 50 km radius of Edmonton are expected to attend the monthly sessions.
- Academic Day is a compulsory activity for residents, and participation is a requirement for completion of the program.
Residents unable to attend Academic Day are required to notify the Family Medicine Postgraduate Office prior to the actual day of the session.
- If a resident is absent from Academic Day and has not given a legitimate explanation ahead of time, a letter will be sent informing the resident of his/her obligation to attend this compulsory activity.
A copy of the letter will be sent to the resident’s advisor and a copy placed on the resident’s file where it will remain against their professional record until its removal is approved by the Program Director.
- Multiple absences from academic activity could also result in remedial training and/or failure to complete program requirements.
- If a resident is unable to attend Academic Days because a rotation unit has refused to release him/her, the Family Medicine Program Director must be notified. It is the responsibility of the Program Director to ensure all Unit Directors respect the family medicine resident's requirements to the Program.
