Throughout the year, one to two-day workshops supplement on-site academic activities and deliver programming not covered in the typical clinical day. Attendance is mandatory for all the residents in the program. The workshops are generally geared only to the RAN residents, but some are combined with the U of A Urban residents. The program reimburses accommodation and travel expenses when residents need to travel outside their home base to attend workshops.
Academic days generally occur once a month, usually on a Friday, and follows the two year curriculum of monthly topics (aligning with the urban program). Residents take part in the academic programming committee, which is responsible for planning and delivering these sessions, to ensure that the content meets their needs. Except when together for workshops, each site conducts its own academic day. Half the day is made up of didactic teaching provided by faculty with expertise in the topic of focus and the other half of the day is small group learning, including therapeutics, review of guidelines and ethics.
In addition to academic days, each site holds weekly academic teaching rounds within the monthly curriculum topic. There are also a variety of other teaching rounds offered at each site, such as emergency medicine rounds and bedside CCU rounds.
A number of life-support courses are mandatory and thereby covered throughout the program, including ATLS, ALARM, PALS and NRP.
