Westview Physician Collaborative Awards

There are three awards:


Alberta Jenkinson & Stephen Buhl Award

Maximum value of $4,000, and a minimum value of $500.00
Awarded annually to a resident who demonstrates qualities of leadership and collegiality and contributes to the well-being of other residents. Recipients must be seen as role models on the basis of their ability to contribute towards a pleasant and productive learning environment.

Nomination Process:
Submissions for nominations should:

  • Be forwarded by the Program Director with consultation from the Residency Program Committee of the nominee
  • Include a letter of support from fellow residents
  • Include documentation provided by the nominator detailing the nominee’s achievements with detailed examples of:
    • Leadership
    • Contributions to the well-being of other residents
    • Contributions to positive learning environment

Deadline: April 16th
Submissions may be sent to the Associate Dean, PGME office.

Dr. and Mrs. Pak Sek Chung Bursary

This scholarship has a value of $800.00.
Awarded annually to a learner with satisfactory academic standing who is conducting research which relates to Chinese Traditional Medicine in an undergraduate or postgraduate degree program.

Nomination Process:
The bursary is open to students enrolled in full or part-time studies who are continuing their studies in Chinese Traditional Medicine. The recipient is chosen on the basis of financial need. Nominees are asked to submit a brief outline of their research to the PGME office.

Deadline: April 15th
Submissions may be sent to the PGME office.

Dr. Joe Tilley & Allin Clinic Family Medicine Award

This $3250.00 award is awarded to a resident in the second year of the Family Medicine Postgraduate Medical Education program. Selection is based on demonstrated scholarly excellence, mentorship abilities and passion for Family Medicine.

Nomination Process:
Each Family Medicine Unit Director is asked to nominate one candidate for the award.

Deadline: Wednesday, February 29, 2012
The Residency Program Committee will select the candidate at the March Meeting.

Gordon Denchfield Thompson Scholarship for Residents

Endowed by the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry; this Award has a value of $500.00. Awarded annually to a PGME resident based on the following criteria:

  • Superior academic achievement
  • A personal commitment to community service.

Nomination Process:
The awards committee will consider nominations on the basis of documentation provided by the nominator addressing the nominee’s achievements in relation to the above criteria.

Deadline: April 15th
Submissions may be sent to Kelly Storie at the PGME office.

Justik Memorial Fund Award

The Justik Medical Clinic offers an award of $500.00 to a second year Family Medicine resident at the University of Alberta. Residents nominated for the award should display responsibility and availability for patient care in a way that shows dedication beyond the routine expectations.

Nomination Process:
Each Family Medicine Unit Director is asked to nominate one candidate for the award. The Residency Program Committee will select the candidate at the April RPC Meeting.

Deadline: mid March
The Justik Clinic will present the award to the recipient in May.

Lionel A. Ramsay Award

This award is given to two first-year RAN residents, one from Red Deer and one from Grande Prairie. The nomination is for the resident at each rural site who has made the greatest contribution in the past year to helping other residents in the Rural Alberta North Program.

The chosen residents will each receive a certificate and $250.00 which may be used as a travel bursary for attendance at the CME meeting, or for the purchase of educational materials.

The award is in memory of Dr. Lionel Ramsey, a graduate of the University of Alberta, and a respected rural physician who died in a ski-mountaineering accident.

Nomination Process:
Nominations are made by the RAN residents by completing the nomination form.

Deadline: March 31st
The award is presented at the RAN Resident Graduation Banquet.

Resident Leadership Award

Valued at $500.00 it is awarded annually to a Family Medicine resident in their final year of residency training. Selection is based on leadership skills, mentorship ability, dedication to Family Medicine, and active involvement and contribution to the evolution and improvement of the Residency Training Program.

Nomination Process:
Nominations are made by a preceptor, resident, faculty advisor, site administrator or program director. Recipients are selected by the Chair of the Department of Family Medicine and the Program Director of the Residency Training Program.

Deadline: May 1st
The award is presented at the Resident Graduation Banquet.

Resident Peer Award

Awarded annually to an Urban Family Medicine resident in their final year of residency training. Selection is based on contribution to resident well-being, dedication to helping others, reliability, professional behaviour and collegiality.

Nomination Process:
By peer nomination of a resident group or individual, or by the Family Medicine Resident Association (FMRA). The recipient is selected by the FMRA.

Deadline: May 1st
The award is presented at the Resident Graduation Banquet.

Resident Research and Scholarship Award

This award is offered by the Department of Family Medicine Residency Program, University of Alberta. The award recognizes the best research and/or scholarly works of a second-year family medicine resident in the Department of Family Medicine. One recipient will be selected for the award each year.

Nomination Process:
The Research Committee will review the applications and recommend the recipient for this award. Residents and/or faculty members can apply or submit a nominee by completing an Application/Nomination Form. A project summary/report should be included with the application.

Deadline: April 12th
The award is presented at the Resident Graduation Banquet.
